The story of a “Sycamore (Cinar) Tree”…
The story of a “Sycamore (Cinar) Tree”…
There are children that grow up earlier than usual, not because they want to but because that is the way it has to be. Life forces itself upon us… The story begins in the city of Kayseri; however, it goes all the way to the United States, stretching across a time span of almost a century. Just like the lifespan of a sycamore tree… Even though sycamore trees rot inside and become hollow as they age, they also continue to flourish. As a result, they provide shade for us to rest under and are beneficial to the cure of many diseases. Just like the central figure of this story who’s name is “Cinar” which means Sycamore tree in Turkish…

Before the 1930’s…
Hayrullah Çınar is one of the oldest inhabitants of the city of Kayseri. His ancestors reach all the way back to the Family of Ekincioğlu, who have settled in the city during the Seljuk Dynasty. Hayrullah Çınar opens his eyes for the first time in the year of 1916. After losing his father at the tender age of 12, he’s forced to become the head of the household and by the time he’s 15 he realizes the true burden of the responsibility of providing for the family. A life lost, gives life to later generations in a way… This is the story of a “Sycamore Tree”…

The year of 1930…
At the age of 15, Hayrullah Çınar is attracted to the carpet business and knows this fascination is a means to provide for his family. Initially, he works on repairing carpets and learns weaving through restoration. Over time he teaches himself every aspect of his specialty in order to improve his profession. He even begins creating patterns by studying the meaning and history of the many symbols and motifs that are used in this artistry. This is truly the first step in the life of the “Çınar” brand.
As Hayrullah enters young adulthood he feels prepared to sell his wares in the markets in Kayseri, as well as, in the surrounding cities. As his reputation and confidence grows he journeys to other cities, traveling on the long black trains back and forth between Kars, Zonguldak, Eskişehir, Denizli and Istanbul to earn his living. Much of his youth goes by traveling and living in the dank rooms of old inns, dim and deserted hotel rooms and train stations…
It is this journey, which started as a step for the Çinar brand to become internationally recognized in the future.

All aboard for Istanbul…
All aboard for Istanbul…
By the time when he completes his military service, the city of Kayseri becomes constricting for him. Like every other industrious youth of his age, he always aims to go a step further. With the help of acquaintances, he makes it to Istanbul. Because he has always been an honest, respectable and hardworking tradesman, he becomes one of the most loved figures of the Grand Bazaar, so much so, that his word is taken as a guarantee. In the course of the first five years, he sells the wares that he had bought in the city of Kayseri and its surrounding villages. He collects the fruits of his efforts shortly.

The birth of the “Sycamore”
After five years on the road, he finally decides that the time has come to start selling his own carpets, instead of selling wares of others. Hayrullah Çınar begins by making an inventory of his wares that are most sought after and important patterns. Subsequently, sets up an establishment in one of the villages close to the center of the city of Kayseri. Later, he moves this workplace to the center of the city. The business booms so abundantly that he cannot maintain the demands in his current establishment. As a result, this is the birth of the production process. He orders carpet looms and distributes them to the women weavers in the villages. Creating employment, one of the never changing missions of Çınar, is established at this time.
Not all novelties in life are about work, He gets married and has children…

The “Sycamore” grows…
With the business growing, Hayrullah Çınar concentrates his attention on the patterns he studied throughout his youth and places patterns he creates on the carpet looms. At the same time, he slowly enters the market as a wholesaler, as well. On account of the fact that his sons are growing up inside of the business, as the business grows, it is virtually inevitable that they also become part of it. Not because they do not have any other options but because the carpet business is in their blood. In the end, the name of the company is changed into “Hayrullah Çınar and Sons”.

From Father to grandchild…

At first, he was into the textile industry. However, when he was only a lad, he had slept on the very sacks, which contained the silk cocoons that they had gone to buy in the city of Bursa. Maybe it was then that fate had woven his destiny… During the economic crisis in Turkey, he arrives in Kayseri to help out his father and brother and that is how he takes his first steps into re-involvement in the rug business. They work without compromising their honesty and principles, thus overcoming the arduous period. Later, those first steps become a walk side by side and, Mehmet Çınar turns his attention towards the tourism industry to take the business to another level. He arrives in Istanbul and opens up a wholesale shop at the Kürkçüler Bazaar under challenging conditions. After all, entrepreneurship runs in the family. Hence the road to becoming what the brand is today, along with how they progressed from Kayseri to Istanbul, start for Çınar.

Changes in the second generation
In the year of 1985, Çınar Halıcık Incorporated is established. Its shareholders are the father, Hayrullah Çınar, and his sons Ahmet Çınar, Mehmet Çınar and Hasan Çınar. Eventually, Hayrullah Çınar and one of the brothers, Ahmet Çınar, pass away. Since then, the company has been run by Memhet Çınar, who is responsible for the sales and marketing of Turkey, as well as, Internationally, together with his brother Hasan Çınar, who oversees every step of manufacturing and production in the city of Kayseri.

Third generation…
The family business continues with the introduction of the third generation. The daughter of Hasan Çınar, Sinem Cinar Sargın, as well as, the son of Mehmet Çınar, Ahmet Çınar, work with their fathers today. Upon Graduating with a degree in Business Management and Administration, Sinem Sargın works with her father supervising production in Kayseri. She is extremely hands on and knows each process of the craft. At the same time, Ahmet Cinar, not unlike his grandfather, learns the techniques, as well as, the meaning of symbolism in the designs from his father and uncles, at a very young age. Although he dreams of becoming an opera singer since he was a child he ends up realizing that the carpet business is an art form of its own and he embraces the art of the craft, as it is in his blood.  After concluding his studies abroad, Ahmet continues to cultivate other interests while continuing the passion for carpets that has been passed down inherently.
One of the first companies to manufacture the silk carpet…

One of the first companies to manufacture the silk carpet…
Together with the developments that have occurred within tourism in Turkey during the year of 1960, Hayrullah Çınar decides to expand his business. “Hayrullah Çınar and Sons”, who have been manufacturing rugs and woolen carpets up until the year of 1965, become one of the first companies in Turkey in the year of 1965 to manufacture a carpet made out of silk. With the increase in demand for silk carpets, in just a couple of years, all the hasps in looms are replaced by hanks. Today, “Çınar” is the largest Turkish company manufacturing silk and wool carpets.

Year 2000’s and change
Between the years of 1962 and 65, with a total personnel ranging from 50 to 100, there are more than 700 – 800 weaver’s working in central Kayseri and its surrounding villages. Today, “Çınar” employs approximately 3,000 to 4,000 people, including its factory and carpet weaving workshops spread across an area of 14,000 square meters. The New Millennium represented the birth of the branding process for Mehmet and Hassan. With boutique stores situated in the cities of Kayseri, Istanbul and Antalya, the brothers felt the U.S. market could be interesting for them. They prepared new designs and color ways in the hopes to show collections in the largest carpet center in Atlanta. Upon entering the show, they were awarded the American Magnificent Carpet Award in the year of 2007, which is considered to be the most prestigious award in the carpet industry, “Çınar” was awarded the same accolades in the following years of 2008 and 2009, thus making a name for itself in the international market. Always striving to venture into new areas, Çınar has opened its first showroom in New York City, in October of 2015.
The never-changing basic principles of Çınar, set forth by Hayrullah Çınar himself, are preserved generation after generation: honesty, non-compromises on quality, renovation and hard work… The story of Çınar, almost nearing a century, is based on these very principles, which are firmly upheld by the following generations… Just like the strong and solid nature of silk, which has been the symbol of nobility for many civilizations…
These are the basic principals that have made, Çınar, the largest manufacturer of silk carpets in Turkey, today.

A way of existence, (modus vivendi): “Çınar”
None of the carpets that are woven by “Çınar” can be considered simply as carpets. They are the indicators of indulgence, a certain style and lifestyle. It is the reflection of a worldview that feeds on the rich culture of the lands where it has grown up but also manages to keep up with the spirit of the modern times. It represents not wealth but elegance and quality. Each “Çınar” is the ultimate example of a modest but unique legacy that will adorn houses for generations. “Çınar” is an ambassador of the arts that follow on the footsteps of civilizations from the past until today and tomorrow… It is what makes a “Cinar” a “Cinar”.

During the century old story of “Çınar”, the brand that the first generation has created is developed and distributed from Kayseri to all over Turkey at the time of the second generation and, with the third generation, it starts expanding abroad… Today, we are at the cornerstone of a story that will continue to evolve for more years to come… As long as the story is being written or, in other words, as long as “Çınar” continues to bring the past to the future, it will be shared with you, esteemed followers. Because, more than bearing witness, this is a story that you are a part of as it continues to unfold…
